Immigrant Jesus

I'm not an American citizen. I don't have a lot of spare money at the moment. What I can do is write hymn tunes. So I've written one to this text by Gary Alderson: 1. You ran from oppression, Crossed the baking sand; Found your own safety In an alien land. And Rachel's still weeping, weeping, Weeping for her children. 2. And you found a haven In that far off place; Shielded and welcomed By a...

#1daywithoutus

Today was the One Day Without Us National Day of Action to celebrate the contributions migrants make to the UK. For me, it was more a day of inaction; the past week has been very busy, and I have been out every evening for the last five nights at either rehearsals or social appointments, which left me more than a bit deflated today. It has been busy in other ways, too. I had a few ideas that will...

Bicycles Change Lives

I'm increasing my cycling to 80 miles per week to improve my fitness. As a way of staying motivated I have signed up for a charity sponsorship thing. Qhubeka is the African programme of World Bicycle Relief. They provide bicycles to children -- many of whom would otherwise walk more than an hour each way to and from school. The bicycles are assembled locally. They are robust and durable, with...

Copyright, Creativity and Culture

I got up this morning to see much hand-wringing on Twitter over Green policy on copyright. The policy in question states: EC1011 On cultural products (literature, music, film, paintings etc), our general policy is to expand the area of cultural activity, that is ways that culture can be consumed, produced, and shared, reduce the role of the market and encourage smaller and more local cultural...

There is just one flesh we can wound

I am discouraged that it seems necessary to say "don't kill Palestinians" or "don't kill Christians in Iraq" or that there is outcry over the plight of the Yazidi. How about "Don't kill people"? It isn't the Palestinian identity, the Christian faith, the Yazidi culture that makes it important not to kill people: it is their humanity. I struggle to understand why this isn't obvious, but apparently...

Yes, I want the Welfare Budget Reduced

There has been a bit of a palaver in the church-y corner of the news recently, with articles saying that most Christians, or at least most Anglicans, "think the welfare budget should be reduced", see the welfare system as being in trouble, blame scroungers and foreigners for some of that trouble, and so on and so forth. This is being used in some instances to criticise the Bishops of the Church...

In which I show up anyway

Each winter, I help out at the Forest Churches Emergency Night Shelter. This is an ecumenical project, open the five coldest months of the year. Guests (or "clients") visit different local churches on different nights of the week. They get an evening meal, somewhere safe to sleep, and breakfast. St Andrew's is too cold to offer sleeping facilities, so some of us help out at Leytonstone United...

The Angel : a poem for Stephanie Bottrill

by Trish Burns Joey slips behind me, mewing as, unthinking, I replace the cups and pens, the writing pad in the box marked "Kitchen." He purrs against my legs - I touch him - grumbles as the front door clicks. He will be better fed. My home is not my home now, Nor have I elsewhere, nor am I fed. I must be gone, and I am gone - ghosting between the houses which sleep on in the early light. How...

WLP2: Workfare and church investments

This is the second letter of the Weekly Letter Project. This week (yes, I'm late) I am writing to James Featherby of the Church of England's Ethical Investment Advisory Group. Dear Mr Featherby, I was pleased to see that the national investing bodies of the Church of England have adopted a policy on executive remuneration on the recommendation of the Church's Ethical Investment Advisory Group...

WLP1: joined-up housing help

This is the first letter of the Weekly Letter Project. This week I am writing to Rev Canon Paul Hackwood, chair of the board of trustees of the Church Urban Fund, about an idea for helping churches provide social housing. I struggled to get this down to one page of A4: the font is smaller than I'd like and I had to mess with the page margins! Next week, I'll try to keep it shorter. Dear Canon...
